End of summer free museum days in Chicago

Chicago is renowned not just for its deep-dish pizzas and skyscrapers, but also its world-class museums. As summer fades, Chicago's top cultural institutions are offering residents a host of discounts and even free entry. Here’s a roundup of what's available:

Adler Planetarium Every Wednesday evening, from 4 – 10 p.m., Illinois residents can journey through space without leaving Earth – and without opening their wallets. "[Residents] are still required to purchase tickets online and in advance, though using a ZIP code will discount the price down to free entry," the Adler informs. The planetarium also champions the "Museums For All" program, aiming to make cultural experiences more accessible. Moreover, if you’re a Bank of America cardholder, you're in for a treat. The bank offers its patrons "complimentary Museum Entry the first weekend of every month."

Art Institute Art lovers, rejoice! Every Thursday evening in August, from 5 – 8 p.m., Illinois denizens can feast their eyes on a vast collection of art for free. Reserving tickets online further facilitates the process. Plus, children under 14 and Chicago teens under 18 always enjoy free access. The Art Institute is also generous to Active-Duty Military personnel, LINK and WIC Cardholders, and Illinois Educators – all eligible for free entry with appropriate IDs.

Field Museum Mark your calendars for Aug. 29 if you're a history or nature buff. Illinois residents can explore the Field Museum from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. But remember, "Tickets are only available... on-site and cannot be reserved." The museum also extends discounts through the "Museums For All" initiative.

Museum of Science and Industry This hotspot has slated two free days in August – the 28th and 29th, from 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Those hailing from Illinois just need to punch in their address or ZIP code while booking online. And for those possessing an EBT or WIC card? Free entry, no state restrictions. Furthermore, US military personnel, veterans, local firefighters, police officers, and teachers can avail of free access with proper ID.

Shedd Aquarium For marine enthusiasts, the Shedd Aquarium's Night Dives is a boon. Scheduled from 5 – 9 p.m., with the last entry at 7 p.m., this event is tailored for those who can’t visit during regular hours. "Illinois residents can catch the chance for free admission on Aug. 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 and 21." However, an early reservation is advised as tickets are known to sell out. Additionally, the Shedd collaborates with "Museums For All," granting free or discounted access to those on food assistance.

As summer closes, Chicago's iconic museums open their doors wider, ensuring art, history, and science remain accessible to all, irrespective of their financial constraints. Check out the respective museums' websites for more on these enticing offers and make the most of the city's rich cultural tapestry.
