Chicago's newest venue, The Salt Shed, partners with Chicago Independent Venue League

Today, The Salt Shed, Chicago’s latest addition to the independent venue community, is happy to announce its partnership with CIVL (The Chicago Independent Venue League). With The Salt Shed’s inaugural outdoor summer concert on August 2nd featuring Makaya McCraven, Sons of Kemet, and Nubya Garcia – the first time guests are being invited to experience parts of the newly renovated Morton’s Salt complex – $1 from every ticket sold will be donated to support CIVL’s mission. The mission of CIVL is to advocate on behalf of Chicago’s independent performance venues. Chicago’s independent venues provide thousands of jobs, as well as millions of dollars in salaries, revenues, charitable donations and taxes. CIVL strives to amplify the essential role these venues have played in defining the music, comedy, and performing arts cultures as they exists in Chicago today.

The economic impact of Chicago’s independent venues is almost immeasurable, as decades of neighborhood vitality have been directly attributed to live performance spaces. CIVL has a successful track record of working with community partners to provide direct relief to independent venues’ staff members, securing funds that were specifically allocated for the daily living expenses of countless workers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The CIVL Save Emergency Relief Fund is all about supporting independent venue employees during hard times, assuring the sustainability of Chicago’s performing arts community. “The Salt Shed is a natural ally of CIVL’s mission to advocate for Chicago’s independent performance venues,” explains CIVL Executive Director Nick Heineman, “whose existence secures the future of Chicago’s arts culture as a whole.”

Created by 16 on Center, the team behind the Empty Bottle, Thalia Hall, Evanston SPACE, Beauty Bar, and The Promontory, The Salt Shed is a new performance and multi-purpose space with over 1.5 acres of both indoor and outdoor grounds along the riverfront. The Salt Shed outdoor summer concert series kicks off on August 2nd, and will feature Sons of Kemet, Makaya McCraven, Fleet Foxes, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Julien Baker, Courtney Barnett, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Lord Huron, Jorja Smith, Death Cab for Cutie, and more. On top of The Salt Shed’s partnership with CIVL, each ticket sold for the summer series will support Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.
