Ohio recreational cannabis is now on sale
OHIO - On August 6, 2024, Ohio marked a historic day as recreational cannabis sales commenced, drawing significant attention and enthusiasm across the state. Nearly 100 medical marijuana dispensaries were authorized to begin selling recreational cannabis, following the issuance of operating certificates from the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control earlier in the week.
In Cincinnati, Jeffrey Reide, eager to be among the first, camped out in his car to ensure he made the inaugural purchase just after sunrise. His excitement was echoed by store employees who celebrated this milestone with applause. Similar scenes unfolded in cities like Columbus and Youngstown, where lines formed early as customers awaited their turn to legally purchase cannabis for recreational use.
This day came nine months after Ohio voters approved Issue 2, legalizing the purchase, possession, and growth of limited amounts of cannabis for personal use by adults over 21. The new law permits individuals to buy up to 2.5 ounces (70 grams) of cannabis and grow up to six plants per individual or 12 per household. Sales are subject to a 10% tax, which will fund administrative costs, addiction treatment, and social equity programs within the cannabis industry.
Dispensaries like Amplify in Cleveland Heights, and others across Northeast Ohio, opened their doors with much fanfare. Toni Savage, a customer at Amplify, expressed the sentiment shared by many, stating, "It's been a long time coming".
The introduction of legal recreational cannabis in Ohio not only marks a significant shift in state policy but also highlights a growing trend of legalization across the United States, reflecting changing public attitudes towards cannabis use.
