Indianapolis gets $15m for EV charging infrastructure

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indianapolis has recently been awarded a $15 million federal grant aimed at expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This significant investment, announced by Congressman André Carson and Mayor Joe Hogsett, is part of a broader initiative to ensure equitable access to EV technology across the city, especially in underserved and minority neighborhoods.

The funding, provided through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program, is a step toward addressing the gaps left by the Indiana Department of Transportation’s initial EV Infrastructure Plan, which did not adequately serve urban and disadvantaged communities. This new grant will prioritize the installation of DC Fast Charging and Level 2 charging stations in locations that align with growing EV demand and environmental justice considerations. Each site will be equipped with at least one Level 2 NEVI standard-compliant charging station, ensuring that even historically marginalized areas benefit from this green technology shift.

In addition to expanding the charging network, the project will involve community engagement and planning processes to decide on site locations, emphasizing the inclusion of local voices in decision-making. This initiative is also part of a broader effort to promote workforce development, with a portion of the funds dedicated to training apprentices and journeymen as licensed EV charging station installers, thereby creating local, skilled jobs.

This grant represents a critical move towards achieving Indianapolis' sustainability goals, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, as outlined in the city’s Thrive Indianapolis sustainability plan.
